This is probably old news but I have been looking for a close comment
script for MT that can close comments which are *not* hosted in a
database. Just in case anyone else needs it:
“MT-Close2 for Movabletype.
MT-Close2 allows you to close comments and trackbacks on multiple entires and blogs on the same installation of MT in one go. This helps fight off comment spam by closing of old entries. “

How to Defeat Bad Web Robots With Apache is a very thorough explanation of how to block bots that do not honour your robots.txt file. I like thi s quote:

It seem like Microsoft is seriously researching developing the idea of making SPAM costly : The Penny Black Project. Interesting as it will have to be a mulitplatform solution to be taken seriously.

This Bayesian SPAM filter written in Perl looks interesting. I have been toying with installing this on my mail account as my private mail address, usually only given to friends, is starting to get SPAM. Maybe, I’ll only forward the non-SPAM-like messages to my mobile phone but review all the emails later from usual Mail filter program.

It’s amazing how IP addresses still manage to get embedded in all sorts of config files. They cause no end of problems when servers change IP addresses! (Now I find that the IP addresses were in the HOSTS file because the servers were used at a demo and just connected together without DNS. Doh!). They remained there until the server was moved several months later…
